Things headaches make me think about

keenquing:

While I spend a fair amount of time pointing out how Rumple hits the GOOD marks of a Beast (the respecting of autonomy, the showering with nice things), I was just thinking that a lot of the people who say he isn’t The Beast like to say his faults aren’t shared with them.

To which I must laugh heartily. Because he shares:

-Cowardice [for a given, self assigned value thereof] with (among others) La Belle et La Bete Beast

BEAUTY: Don’t be a coward! Use those powerful claws to hold on to life! Fight! Get up and let out a roar! Scare death away!
THE BEAST: Beauty, if I were a man … doubtless I would … do as you say … but poor beasts who would prove their love … only know … how to lie on the ground … and die.

-Violence, seemingly groundless, with Netvor (who slaughters an entire caravan in the opening minutes) and La Belle et La Bete Beast (who kills a deer, but seems to place this on the same level as murder, and startles Beauty by arriving at her door covered in blood and asking forgiveness)

-Violence, protective, with 1987 BatB’s Vincent (there’s no way to list all the times Vincent righteously kicks ass for Cathy—or her for him), Roses and Thorns’ Drew (when she goes to rescue Angelique from her family), and Disney’s Beast (the wolf scene, Kingdom Hearts)

-Self loathing/depression/questionable mental stability with—I think Vincent’s the only one with any kind of self worth and generally stable mental health honestly, but Rum’s levels show up most clearly in Netvor (who is either hallucinating or is actually haunted by something throughout the film) and Roses and Thorns’ Drew (who plays up her crazy when Angelique’s father shows up, but even when not performing is…very not right, for good reason).

But yeah no, of course the fact he’s still a disabled, older dude with issues even after her kiss means he’s not really a Beast and is just an abusive douchecanoe </sarcasm>.

But ask yourself: Why is there that knee-jerk rejection of any effort to “overthink” pop culture? Why would you ever be afraid that looking too hard at something will ruin it? If the government built a huge, mysterious device in the middle of your town and immediately surrounded it with a fence that said, “NOTHING TO SEE HERE!” I’m pretty damned sure you wouldn’t rest until you knew what the hell that was — the fact that they don’t want you to know means it can’t be good.

Well, when any idea in your brain defends itself with “Just relax! Don’t look too close!” you should immediately be just as suspicious. It usually means something ugly is hiding there.

This quote is in an article about superhero movies, but it applies to so many things.

Still on the Amazon fanfic thing, sorry

cleolinda:

Mildly-supported intuition as to what I think Amazon’s doing here. Short version: Acquire material for tie-in books they don’t have to adequately compensate for (as greyduck mentions in the comments—also possibly an idea farm for future TV episodes); prevent another Fifty Shades of Grey scenario where everyone makes out like a bandit except the original inspiration/rights holder; exploit a creative community without understanding how it  works.

A comment I just added, as well: I see a majority of fandom writers (and readers?) not being on board, but the writers who do publish through Amazon appealing to non-fandom readers. Which may be all Amazon wants after all—a few potential tie-ins, not the entire conversion of fandom for profit. The real problem would come in if whoever decided to stop any fanfic that wasn’t published for profit through Amazon. That would be like herding cats (and then trying to issue them C&Ds), though.

Why would I pay money for PG-rated fanfic…….

Why would I give you all the rights to my fanfic w/ a clause ensuring that if the copyright holder decides to gank said fanfic I get diddly-squat……

Why…..

I feel like you didn’t think this through.

Amazon: We’re going to start publishing fanfic for money! (PG-rated, of course, and at the discretion of the copyright holder, natch, and no cursing and watch the violence and …)

Every single fanfic writer on the internet:
